Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disease caused by repeated head injuries, including concussions and even milder blows to the head. Historically called “punch-drunk syndrome” or “dementia pugilistica,” CTE was first recognized in boxers in the 1920s.
